Case Studies / Learning Disabilities and Autism Advocacy – Client C

LD&AA Client C

Client C has a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD) and expressed they found it hard to communicate what they wanted or needed.

Barriers faced in being heard:

Client C noticed people found it difficult to understand them as well. They attempted to gain a support worker for their every day challenges such as trying to move house due to poor living conditions and needed support making complaints where they had been mistreated. Client C felt they got taken advantage of due to being autistic and felt vulnerable to this in most situations.

Advocacy undertaken:

  • Support needed was written down as Client C had problems communicating and with their memory

Outcomes:

Client C felt they were less at risk of being taken advantage of with an Advocate present. Client C has been able to submit complaints with the support of an Advocate and has had an Advocate present at meetings to improve the flow of communication and to help explain when things were a little complicated. Client C and the Advocate then debriefed over how the meeting went and if anything needed further clarification.
